PICK A FIGHT WEEK 1: WHO IS YOUR KING?

“I pledge allegiance…”

That short phrase is one all of us have heard and probably repeated at some point or another in our lives. For most of us, it was part of a routine and recitation that we had become accustomed to repeating…but have we ever thought about what it means when we do that? What is the connotation that making a statement like that carries?

The word allegiance is defined as, “the loyalty, devotion, or fidelity a person owes to a group, cause, leader, or country. It signifies a commitment to support or obey, often in exchange for protection or as part of a shared belief.” In light of this definition, what we so often just casually said or repeated carries a whole different meaning. It is no longer just a cute poem for kids, but instead a declaration of where our loyalties lie.

So let me ask, where does your allegiance lie? I’m not talking about a pledge to a flag or a political alignment or even patriotism. I’m asking who, not what, are you devoted to? For us as believers, it is not just about our loyalty to our country. It is about who we are serving. Every day, we make a decision regarding who we will serve. We decide who we are putting on the throne of our lives, and that decision determines our future.

Your allegiance will be tried and tested. You will be tempted to compromise, to seek for the comfortable and convenient rather than to take a stand and align your life with Jesus.  If you have drifted, it’s not too late. Return your allegiance—not to an idea or ideal, but to Jesus. Even if you haven’t drifted, take this time to renew your allegiance.

Who is your King? Your future depends on it.
