PICK A FIGHT WEEK 2: WHO IS ON THE THRONE?

Have you ever known someone who thinks everyone is out to get them? Maybe it is someone who buys into every conspiracy theory being thrown out and thinking that the government or “Big Brother” is working everything for their (and the world’s) destruction.

There is a guy that I went to school with that is exactly like that. For quite a while, I was watching him post on social media about how the government was manipulating things to destroy life as we know it, and he wasn’t afraid to very openly post his thoughts about the situation. I found myself beginning to be caught up in his thought processes. It got so bad that I finally decided that it wasn’t healthy for me to see and read his rants (not to mention that he is most likely on several government watch lists). So, for my own mental health and to avoid association with his thinking, I unfollowed him.

Most likely there was some truth to what he posted, but even if some of what he was saying was true, I couldn’t afford to (and didn’t want to) allow those things to take control of my thinking and my life. So, how do we combat the tendency of getting caught up in the cycle of worry and fear that can come? The answer is to know who is on the throne! When we are confident that God is on the throne of our lives and that he is in control, our tendency to worry lessens. As our vision of God expands, our anxiety shrinks because we know that—regardless of what the news tells us, what we read or view on a social media outlet, or what lies the enemy is speaking into our spirit—God has it handled.

The reality is, whatever fills the throne of your life will determine your worship or your worry. We must deal with it, but we also have this truth. The One who sits on the throne is not distant and unreachable. He reigns and redeems. He can calm our fears, strengthen our trust, and shift us from panic to surrender. But it is up to us.

Be intentional about making sure that you do what you can to keep God on the throne of your life. Every day, take some time to put God in his rightful place in your life. Spend time meditating on the things of God and on God’s Word. Talk to God through prayer. Allow for moments of worship throughout your daily routine. The news cycle may continue to shift and change, but the King who sits on the Throne does not. He is still in control, and at the end of time, he will still be on his throne.
